Welcome to Family and Consumer Science

 

7th Grade
This introductory class teaches basic techniques in sewing and food preparation.  Students will learn how to follow directions using a pillow project kit.  Hand sewing and the use of the sewing machine will be demonstrated.  Basic techniques of food preparation will be investigated through hands-on experiences, kitchen lab work, table setting and manners.
The students will explore various aspects of child development:
Study of Children Tips for care of Children Remembering themselves as Children
 
There is no textbook for this class.  All information in written fashion will be generated by the instructor and distributed through a series of hand outs.  Reading assignments may be taken from current periodicals in the field.
 
Each student is expected to exert a maximum effort toward the learning in this course.  This will assisted by:
  • Keeping of a neat and complete notebook for the course of all work and handouts.
  • Participation and completion of all class activities.
  • Participation in class discussions.
  • Cooperative effort towards fellow students and instructor.
 
Each day every student will have the same homework assignment:
  • Know what you will be doing in class the next day.
At times, there will also be research and investigative assignments given.
 
Grading:
Homework 20%
Assignments 20%
Notebook 10%
Tests/Quizzes 50%
 
Mrs. Quaranta is available after school most days except for Mondays due to district commitments.  Please do not hesitate to ask.
 

 

8th Grade
 
This dynamic life management course teaches skills that students can use throughout their lifetime.  Experiences will be provided in the following curriculum areas to meet the needs of the adolescent learner:
  • Personal Development - making decisions, setting goals, and exploring careers.
  • Personal and Home Management - managing time, money, and making wise consumer purchases; and keeping a home clean and safe.
  • Foods and Nutrition - following healthy guidelines.  Making informed food choices, and preparing nutritious snacks and meals.
