Gifted Support Program
The mission of middle school gifted education is to advance, enrich, and/or extend student learning with careful thought to the intellectual, emotional, social, and affective strengths and needs of individuals engaged in independent and group learning environments. Unique learning experiences in core and/or encore classes are designed to stimulate curiosity and enhance intellectual and creative thinking skills.
Grade 6 : Advanced RELA: WordMasters Analogyy and Literature Challenges, Junior Great Books Short Stories and Novels, Critical Reading and Writing,
* MathCounts Compettion
Grades 7/8: Exploratory Gifted Options: Future Cit/Sim City 4000, Videography/Media Ethics, Opera Study, Independent Research and/or Writing Workshop
Extra-Curricular Opportunities
MathCounts ; 24 Challenge; WordMasters Analogy and Literature Challenges; Future City Competition; Odyssey of the Mind; “Youth to Youth” Seminars; and also a variety of Leadership, Service, Athletic , and Spirit clubs offered at the Middle Level.
Transitions for Gifted Students
Upper Elementary to Middle School
TRANSITION: 5th to 6th Gifted Students
Prior to the end of the school year:
•Mar./April UE and MS GIEP transition teams meet with each parent for their child’s MS plan
•May: MS Teacher of Gifted visits UE gifted class to “meet, greet, survey” transitioning students
•June: UE gifted students visit MS Teacher of Gifted and tour gifted classroom for UE/MS “Move Up Day”
•Early September: “MS Back-to-School Night” general curricular sessions for parents of gifted
Middle to Secondary
TRANSITION: 8th to 9th Gifted Students
In early March:
•MS/HS Teachers of Gifted conduct a “gifted seminar” for transitioning students
•Information session of HS gifted options and logistics discussed
•Q & A Session: MS/HS Teachers of Gifted answer questions about HS program
•HS Guidance Counselors meet with transitioning 8th students to project HS rosters
•Sept. - HS Teacher of Gifted conducts GIEP with both student and parents
