6th Grade Social Studies
Students will study archaeology, geography, and sociology of the ancient civilizations
of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome. The focus is on the characteristics of a civilization: stable food supply, social structure, a system of government, a religious system, a highly developed culture, advances in technology, and a highly developed written language. Students will participate in various projects and presentations to enhance their understanding of ancient societies. Through social studies, students will develop skills in research and reporting, both oral and written, while utilizing the library, Internet and other resource materials.
7th Grade Social Studies
Students will study various eras in world history, including the Middle Ages, rise of Islam, and the Renaissance. In addition to historical concepts, students will learn about the various lifestyles, traditions, and elements of world cultures. Seventh grade students will complete a variety of performance task assessments which focus on educational skills including writing, research methods, and public speaking. Students will participate in cooperative learning activities, experiential exercises, and creativity in learning. Additionally, students will continue to develop skills in mapping, timelines, analyzing graphic organizers, and the integration of technology. This course is designed according to student centered learning, and teaches history while incorporating material through all disciplines of social studies. An emphasis is placed on geography, sociology, and anthropology.
8TH Grade U.S. History I
The American History I course covers the important events, people, and lessons in American History from the American Revolution through the rise of industry. It is the introductory course to United States History II which is offered in 10th grade. After completing this course students will be able to: formally debate an issue, participate in mini dramas, role play, write a research paper and discuss issues from multiple perspectives. Students will further develop study and research skills, acquire skills in mapping, timelines and graphic organizers, and integrate technology into their future social studies classes. This course is student centered focusing on critical thinking skills that enable students to become lifelong learners. Teacher presentations will introduce the material through the social studies spectrum focusing on areas including history, geography, sociology, political science and economics. Students will participate in many lessons focused to reach those with different learning styles and ability levels. |
