• Band

The NHS Middle School Band Program focuses on the refinement of all musical skills learned during courses of study in the New Hope-Solebury School District. Emphasis is placed on intonation, rhythmic accuracy, dynamic contrast, ensemble blend, and correct interpretation of various musical genres and time periods. Band students will be expected to submit frequent playing exams via video. Students enrolled in the NHS Middle School Band will be required to perform in four concerts per academic year.

Students will perform a variety of choral repertoire in two or more parts, while developing and maintaining proper vocal technique. This course will also address sight singing strategies, both melodically and rhythmically, as well as interval training. Students will also sing in various languages and learn their appropriate pronunciations. The overall goal is to establish good musicianship in all the various areas that choral singing encompasses. Each individual choir will sing alone and in various combinations with the other two grade levels.

This course is a continuation of what has been taught in the previous string/orchestra classes offered at New Hope-Solebury School District. The students will be exposed to a variety of literature in styles from the Baroque period to 20th century music. Technical exercises, technique studies, sight-reading and performances pieces will be used to challenge, motivate and develop skills in all areas of performance. Students will perform in a minimum of 2 concerts per year and attend one competition per year. Topics in music history and theory will also be studied.

    General Music

General Music is a course that is designed to enhance listening enjoyment, technology skills, and ability. There is a strong emphasis on the elements of music, the characteristic styles of major historical periods, and the lives and works of key composers within the Western musical tradition. In addition to the musical knowledge, there is a strong component of music technology. The marriage of the two topics creates a fun educational environment that will prepare students for the ever changing world of technology. The course includes in-class demonstrations, slide shows, movie creation, and attendance at outside musical events. No previous musical study is required.
