The Bucks County Reading Olympics is a “Celebration of Reading” for our 5th grade students at the UES. The purpose of this “reading club” is to encourage all children to read more, to read a variety of books, and to enjoy the excitement of reading and talking about books with their friends. Overall, the event inspires children to become lifelong readers. The program involves teams of students reading books from a prepared book list, and meeting to discuss the books read every other Friday mornings or recess of each month, October through March. In March, there is a Reading Olympics competition as the culmination for the program. The competition consists of teams of 8 to 16 students who agree to read from groups of 45 books appropriate for their age and reading level and then participate in 3 rounds of questioning to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the books read. The event encourages all participants to read a variety of books, and share their ideas during discussions.
