6th graders working on Ancient Egypt Projects

Students in Mr. Cohen's 6th grade social studies class recently brought ancient Egypt to life, exploring the fascinating world of pharaohs, pyramids, and hieroglyphs.

Students learned how hieroglyphs work and practiced reading these intricate symbols, gaining insight into one of history’s earliest writing systems.

As a hands-on extension, students simulated the making of papyrus. Using lunch bags torn into strips and a mixture of glue and water, they overlapped the strips to create their own paper—mirroring the ancient Egyptian process.

Finally, students stepped into the role of Egyptian scribes, writing their names in hieroglyphs on their papyrus and adding other symbols meaningful to them, then decorating their scrolls with their own creative touches.

Through these activities, our 6th graders didn’t just learn about history—they experienced it firsthand!
