MS Steam mechanical arm built by a student

New Hope-Solebury Middle School seventh grader Leonardo Fresco is taking his passion for engineering to impressive new heights through an innovative STEAM project that recently wowed members of the Board of School Directors.

Under the guidance of Middle School STEAM teacher Jim Gosser, Leonardo designed and built a fully functioning mechanical arm using LEGO components, combining creativity, problem-solving, engineering, and computer programming skills throughout the process.

Leonardo independently researched the design and mechanics behind robotic arms before constructing the model and coding the arm himself to perform working movements. His dedication, curiosity, and perseverance were on full display as he presented the project and demonstrated the arm’s capabilities during this week’s board meeting.

This project is a powerful example of how STEAM education encourages students to think creatively, innovate, and apply classroom learning to real-world challenges. Through hands-on experiences like this, students are developing valuable skills in engineering, technology, collaboration, and critical thinking that will support them far beyond the classroom.

New Hope-Solebury School District is excited to continue expanding these opportunities for students through the development of a new Middle School STEAM Lab as part of the Lions Legacy 2030 initiative. The future-focused space will help inspire even more creativity, exploration, and innovation for generations of Lions to come.
