group of individuals surrounding Lion sculpture

Located outside the District Office at 180 W. Bridge Street in New Hope, the sculpture represents the creativity, pride, and partnerships that make the New Hope-Solebury community unique. From the artist’s original vision to the hands-on involvement of students and the collective support of community partners, the project brought together people of all ages to create a lasting symbol of Lion Pride.

The project was made possible through the generous support of the New Hope-Solebury Education Fund, whose funding helped turn the vision into reality. New Hope Arts and the Public Arts Program were key in the collaborative effort, helping connect the school community with local artistic talent and supporting a project that celebrates the important role of the arts in the community.

Sculptor Mike Gyampo brought the vision for the lion sculpture to life, working alongside New Hope-Solebury High School students who helped construct the piece, under the guidance of Mark Mannion, High School art teacher. The project provided students with a meaningful opportunity to participate in a creative, hands-on experience alongside a local artist, connecting classroom learning with real-world artistic collaboration.

Following the sculpture’s creation, students across the district participated in a K–12 naming contest, with Lionardo selected as the winning name — a fitting tribute to the school district’s Lion mascot and the creativity behind the project.

“This sculpture is a wonderful example of what can happen when a community comes together around a shared vision,” said Dr. Charles Lentz, superintendent of schools. “It reflects the creativity and talent of our students, the dedication of our educators, and the generosity of the community partners who help make meaningful experiences like this possible. We are proud to have a lasting symbol of Lion Pride that brings our school district and community together.”

The district extends its sincere appreciation to Mike Gyampo for his vision and artistic leadership; Mark Mannion and the district’s art department for their work supporting student involvement; the students who contributed their time and creativity; New Hope Arts and Public Arts Program for its partnership; and the New Hope-Solebury Education Fund for its generous financial support.

More than a sculpture, Lionardo stands as a reminder of what can be accomplished when schools and communities work together. It celebrates the power of the arts to bring people together, creates a lasting connection between students and their community, and gives future generations of Lions a new reason to take pride in where they learn, grow, and belong.
